2018 Canadian Waste to Resource Summary

The 9th Annual Canadian Waste to Resource Conference was held last week.  We had over 300 registered attendees, speakers and guests attend over the 3 day event that included the facility tours to local Toronto waste management facilities, an amazing opening gala reception followed by unique and informational plenary sessions.

As part of this years event – we launched our first ever app for the conference along with a contest for someone to win a full conference registration for 2019.  The ‘Refer & Win’ winner is Lori Andrews from Dillon Consulting Limited! Lori Andrews will receive a free conference pass to the 2019 conference.

Our first morning session included a panel with unique insights from three industry leaders, Dan Pio, President – Canada, Waste Connections of Canada, Dave Richmond, Executive Vice President, Matrec/GFL Environmental Inc., and Aaron Johnson, President, Waste Management of Canada. They lead a discussion around the challenges, opportunities and future outlook for waste management in Canada and beyond.

Following the morning general sessions, all participants visited the Poster Board Presentations where students showcased their findings of new and innovative technologies over lunch. The afternoon included breakout sessions covering topics such as recycling and resource recovery, food waste/organics waste management and green energy.

On the last day of the Canadian Waste to Resource Conference, the morning session included a panel presentation, titled  Sustainably Transforming Revenues and moderated by John Carlton, Solid Waste Program Lead, HDR. Speakers included Vince Sferrazza, Director of Policy, Planning and Support Solid Waste Management Services, City of Toronto, Francois Leury, CPA CGA, Financial Services Account Manager, Public Works & Environmental Services Department, City of Ottawa, and Emil Prpic, Manager, Recycling and Waste Disposal, City of Hamilton.

Closing out the conference, we were thrilled to have Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation & Parks, Rod Phillips, deliver the luncheon keynote address outlining his objectives for the Ministry and discussing the priorities of the Doug Ford Progressive Conservative government.

We want to thank all attendees for supporting the CWRC this year and we look forward to seeing you next year as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary of the Canadian Waste to Resource Conference, October 9-10, 2019 in downtown Toronto again!
